The Beatitudes: Blessed Are You, Poor in Spirit

I don’t have notes on the beatitudes but I did glean something rather interesting. “Blessed are the poor in spirit for theirs is the kingdom of heaven”. The statement in Greek implies knowledge of one’s own poverty and absolute reliance on God. Therefore, the scripture is saying that those of us who know that we are poor and helpless and our only hope is in God, those who have no other rock to which to cling – those are the blessed ones for they will see God’s kingdom .

I never knew being weak and helpless (and knowing it) was such a wonderful thing but then, Jesus said heaven was for little children, didn’t he?
